Class II: continuing education classes in varying styles of calligraphy for teachers only (credit through Northwest Nazarene University & Boise State University)
Class III: private classes can be arranged for groups or individuals in a specific hand, ie. italic, blackletter, uncial, copperplate, spencerian, etc.
| Historical Survey of Lettering - |
| An exploration of the progression of ancient letter forms includes hands-on activities in cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphs, Chinese Brush, Greek, Roman and Celtic lettering. . Appropriate for art/humanities teachers or those interested in the historical background of the alphabet. |
| Blackletter - Calligraphy of the Middle Ages |
| This course is designed to give a background in hand lettering known as Gothic-Blackletter for its dense geometric style. Teachers will be introduced to upper and lower case of this medieval alphabet. Illumination of capital letters with gold leaf will be demonstrated. Simple vertical and horizontal strokes makes this the easiest script for new learners. Appropriate for art/humanities teachers and/or anyone who likes to produce signs, certificates or art projects. |
| Italic - Calligraphy of the Renaissance |
| This course is designed for those who would like to learn an easy handwriting style using both monoline and an edged pen. Teachers will be introduced to upper and lower case of this renaissance alphabet. Flourished (embellished) letters will also be explored as found on original documents and maps of the times. Appropriate for art/humanities teachers and/or anyone who likes to produce certificates. |
| Pointed Brush Lettering - |
| This course is designed for those who would like to learn to do lettering with a round or pointed brush and waterbased inks/gouache. Related to italic, the control of "thicks and thins" is all based on pressure and release, much like Chinese brush strokes. The possibilities of this tool will be explored to develop an individual "hand". Previous knowledge of calligraphy or letter forms is helpful. |
| Flat Brush Lettering - |
| This course is designed for those who would like to learn to do lettering with a flat ½" brush and gouache and acrylic paint. Teachers will be introduced to upper and lower case of this brush alphabet which is similar to italic. Final product will be on fabric. Previous knowledge of calligraphy or letter forms is helpful. |
